Apologies to St. Valentine and anyone with a birthday the second month of the year, but let’s face it — February can be pretty … blah. And when you’re anxiously awaiting spring temperatures, sunny days, and Dogwoods in bloom, early March isn’t much better. Finding things to pass the time — like fun dates with friends or significant others — can go a long way in helping pass the time until Spring. In that spirit, we’ve put together a guide to four fun dates to help you beat your winter blues. Read on for an escape from your doldrums!
The Romantic Date:
Since it is the month of romantic love, we’ll start with the significant other date. To do this right, make reservations in advance and then surprise your boo with a dreamy date in the middle of a dreary week. (Pro tip: lunch dates are sometimes even more fun than dinner dates!).
Here’s your itinerary:
Begin by enjoying a glass of bubbly from Vin Rouge’s very impressive wine list. Their cozy bar will get you in the mood for romance. When you’ve had just the right amount of bubbly, take a stroll up the street to the Regulator Bookshop, where you can browse to your heart’s content and share your favorite finds. Then, walk next door for a Latin American-inspired meal at the delicious Blue Corn Cafe. Finally, take your date to Ninth Street Flowers and let them pick out a bouquet to bring home. Voila, a perfect outing with your love!
The Family Date:
Show your partner and kids a little love and plan a date for everyone. The kids will love it, and you can go out on the town without having to pay for a babysitter. Ninth Street businesses have always been committed to kid and family friendly experiences, and we promise to show you a good time.
Here’s your itinerary:
If you have small children, stop in at Tiny to read picture books in the adorable book section at the front of the store. If your kids are twelve and older, start by locking yourselves in a room at Bull City Escape and puzzling your way out! Then, stroll up to Elmo’s, the ultimate in kid-friendly diners, and have breakfast for dinner (pancakes, anyone?). Top off the evening with ice cream at Pincho Loco.
The Girl’s Afternoon Out Date:
The only thing better than a girl’s night out is spending an entire, relaxed afternoon with your bestie. You’ll go home refreshed and ready to take on whatever the week throws at you (or, maybe you’ll just take a nap).
Here’s your itinerary:
Start with a yoga class at Yoga Off East, a cozy studio that specializes in well-paced flow classes. After you’ve worked up an appetite, stroll down to Juju for some Asian fusion tapas, and then finish up your afternoon at the beautiful and eclectic One World Market shopping for jewelry, clothes, gifts, or home goods.
The Off-Campus Date:
This one is for college students. Take a break from your books, grab a best friend (or a group of them!), and head over to Ninth Street.
Here’s your itinerary:
Start by browsing records at Hunky Dory (they even have a bargain basement for students on a budget!) and check out work of local artisans at Zola Craft Gallery. After shopping, fill up on delicious Middle Eastern fare at International Delights. Finally, head back to campus with a latte from Triangle Coffee House.
